less-than-official Key103 internet audio feed, which is where Wednesday
and Thursday's recordings come from:

The Talk Radio shows were always accompanied by
great promo mixes by the one and only Creative Kev, and one quiet '99 bank
holiday during Nick's first run on LBC, I tried my hand myself, armed with
only a realaudio copy of a previous show.
The idea was kind of to sound as if it was Nick
and Carol discussing what a disaster the previous week's show had been.
Much of Nick's initial rant about "Well, I'm not really ready yet, but
let's just do it now anyway - just bumbling his way through a show, almost
like he's in his own front room, like he doesn't even have to try, he's
that fabulous" was cut up and re-ordered from Nick's discussion of the Frank Skinner show.
Similarly Carol's "for me it wasn't that great.. highly embarrassing, get
her off because there's obviously something wrong with her" came from a
discussion of the same show (which was of course the historic one with
Tara Palmer-Tompkinson.)
The 'fessional sounding voiceovers were
just cut up from LBC trails, (many still with music behind them, but the
bed hides it) and the reactions between 'Nick Abbot' (Oh, is that me?) and
'Just incredible!' (Sounds like me.) were actually from Nick's phone call
to Neil Rogers on WQAM.
I quite liked the final result [mp3] at the
time, and Nick even played it on the show. On reflection, at a minute 30,
it was too long, the discussion with the (forgotten) third DJ being
nothing other than filler. Later on I produced a second version which I
liked a lot better at just 1 minute. Recently I also stumbled across an early version of the mix
which was only finished up to around 55 seconds. I really did like the
'Oh, that happened this week, did it?' piece, which sadly never made it
into either of the later versions, so I stuck a tag on it and let the bed
run as a kind of 'long tail'. Anyway.. if you're interested,
enjoy.

IMPORTANT - NETSCAPE
USERS
Netscape does NOT download
RealAudio files from this website (or many others) properly.
It treats RealAudio files as text documents and messes up the
binary data contained therein. If you've downloaded a file
from this site and find that when you play it, RealPlayer
crashes, that's the
problem!
The solution
is, however, easy - try this little utility called uncook - you can run it over your broken
files and it will un-Netscape-ise them, which will make them
play in RealPlayer. Try it, it works.
